MACHANN, WALTER J. "FATHER"
Father Machann said Odio called him the day after she was visited by the 3 Cubans (including Leon). She was on her way to a Charity Event which was to be attended by Janet Leigh. The Dallas Times Herald, Fri Sept 27, 1963, p. 14-A, "Actress' Hubby Shares Limelight", by Jim Koethe, reported Janet Leigh and her husband Bob Branch arrived in Dallas Thurs Sept 26, 1963, celebrating their first wedding anniversary. Fri Sept 27, 1963, Leigh appeared in Ft Worth at the Texas Asso for Mental Health benefit. This would indicate Cubans visited Silvia Odio on Thurs evening, Sept 26, 1963. Father Machann knew Antonio Arturo NAVARRO AULET and Navarro's wife, a "very good Catholic woman... pious."
Miami inquiries regarding several people associated with the Odio story, including Father Walter Machann, turned up blank. Weisberg notes that Machann had been in New Orleans and interviewed by the Secret Service during this period.

MEROLA, JOSEPH RAYMOND
HSCA asked R.D. Matthews if he knew Merola. Matthews said, "No." A pilot placed on "blacklist" by U.S. Government.
Jospeh Raymond Merola was an associate of Norman Rothman and the Mannarino brothers (Sam and Gabe). The Mannarinos, members of the Pittsburgh Mafia under John Sebastian LaRocca, were the original owners of the Sans Souci in Havana.
Merola was involved in flying guns to Castro with Rothman, Lou Pessolano, and the Mannarinos.
He was convicted of transporting stolen guns from a National Guard Armory in Canton, Ohio (Pittsburgh Mafia territory) to Castro's forces in 1958. He got five years in prison. I believe that is the case in which Jose Aleman testified for the prosecution.
DOB- 10/9/1925 - Pittsburgh, PA
DOD- 7/14/1994
Associates (in addtion to those above): Charlie "The Blade" Tourine, Santo Trafficante, and astronaut Gordon Cooper (?!?!).
Interesting sidenote to his file. His name was Joseph Raymond Merola, but there was another underworld character named Joseph Paul Merola whos einfo was included in the file. He had a bunch of arrests for bookmaking and beverage violations. The interesting thing is he is the only other wiseguy I know of who's primary business was a fish camp. He owned Popeye's Fishing Camp in Conch Key. The other fish camp wiseguy was Trafficante soldier Al Scaglione, who owned the Ruskin Fish Camp in Ruskin, FL.

MONK, CLARA JO
Forum member, Dixie Dea, has kindly allowed me to post the contents of an email she sent me. (see below)
Johnnie Maxie Witherspoon mentions that the other waitress working at Austin's Barbecue that Tippit was interested in was one Clara Jo Monk. What is curious here is that some time back, I was researching a guy named Arthur Brown who I suspected was known to Ruth and Michael Paine. Brown died in February of 1963 but his step daughter was Clara Jo Monk. Back then, I had no idea who she was or that she was supposedly someone of interest to Tippit. Like they say, it's a small world.
Thanks, Dixie. You are a class act.
James
Below is an interview Jack Moriarity, of the HSCA, had with Johnnie Maxie
Witherspoon, in 1977, in which she mentions Clara Jo Monk.
Johnnie Maxie Witherspoon was interviewed in her home on 9-24-77 by Jack
Moriarity and two other members of the House Select Committee. At the
time she was unemployed.
Information collected at that time:
Date of birth: 10-10-34, Height 5'1", Weight 130, Eyes: Blue, Hair
Blonde.
Wears glasses and is right handed.
Had been Tippit's girl friend 1961-1963
Husband in 1963: Stephen Thompson Jr.
Thompson "is remarried. He and wife have a nightclub and love it
now. They had been in the antique business."
"Tippit had shown an interest in another female employee at Austin's
barbaque by the name of Clara Jo Monk, a car hop and waitress. ( Married
to a truck driver)."
The investigators were especially interested in the station wagon that
J.D. had bought while the two were dating. Moriarity: " During
that time J.D. Tippit bought what may have been
a new station wagon, may have been a Pontiac and it might have been the
color blue, is that right?"
Johnnie: "To the best that I can remember, yes."
Moriarity: "Would this have been about a 1963, if you recall, or a
62? I know it was within that three year period but was this toward the
end of your relationship or at the beginning of it?" Johnnie: "
Closer to the end of it I believe." I think that they were
interested in the station wagon because a station wagon fitting that
description was seen driving around the TSBD before the motorcade
entered Dealey Plaza. However, it was described as an Oldsmobile.
Johnnie's mother, Verda Mae Herell, was interviewed on 3-14-78.
Verda worked at the Clifton Towers Coffee Shop located on Ballard ( one
block from the Dobbs House where LHO stopped for breakfast. Lee had also
eaten at her place of employment. Verda: "He was a regular dinner
customer. He never talked to anyone except to her when he ordered his
regular hamburger platter and left a 25 cent tip."
Her boss was Zerrell Owen. Verda said that there were few tears when
JFK was killed because they "were all Republicans." Also working
there was a "black boy cook" Amos (Euins) , about 16, whose parents,
brother and sister worked there. On 11-22-63, the police called advising
that they were holding Amos as a witness as he saw JFK shot.
Verda knew Tippit well. She used to sit in a booth and talk to J.D.
about raising kids. "He was interested in the subject..." She was aware
of his three jobs and said "the saddest aspect of the entie tragedy was
the development of the older son in the wrong direction. It happened
from the moment of J.D's. death."

MORALES, DAVID SANCHEZ
DOB: 8/26/25 POB: Arizona Social Security # 526-20-4565 DOD: 5/8/78 POD: Willcox, Arizona 85643. CIA In Cuba 1958-1960
David Sanchez Morales, aka "El Indio," worked for the CIA under the cover of Army employment. He was involved in PBSUCCESS, the CIA's 1954 overthrow of the Guatemalan government, and rose to become Chief of Operations at the CIA's large JMWAVE facility in Miami. In that role, he oversaw operations undertaken against the regime of Fidel Castro in Cuba.
Morales was involved in other covert operations of the CIA, reportedly including plots to assassinate Fidel Castro, training intelligence teams supporting the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, the CIA's secret war in Laos and its controversial Operation Phoenix in Vietnam, and the hunting down of Che Guevera in Bolivia.
After Morales' retirement in 1975 he returned to his native Arizona, and died of a heart attack in 1978. HSCA investigator Gaeton Fonzi traced Morales to Wilcox, Arizona shortly after Morales' death, and talked to his lifelong friend Ruben Carbajal and a business associate of Morales' named Bob Walton. Walton told Fonzi of an evening, after many drinks, when Morales went into a tirade about Kennedy and particularly his failure to support the men of the Bay of Pigs. Morales finished this conversation by saying "Well, we took care of that son of a bitch, didn't we?" Carbajal, who had been present at the confession, corroborated it.
Morales was also named by Howard Hunt as a participant in the JFK assassination.
Carbajal described the long line of cars and men in dark glasses who paid their respects at the funeral of Morales, whose tombstone reads simply: "David S. Morales, SFC US Army, World War II Korea, 1925 - 1978." Morales operated under deep cover for such a high-level officer, one who is discussed in books by insiders like David Phillips, Bradley Ayers, and John Martino. The released CIA records on Morales are a faint outline of the files the CIA must maintain.
In November 2006, a BBC Newsnight program alleged that film footage showed that David Morales, George Joannides, and Gordon Campbell were present at the Ambassador Hotel when Robert Kennedy was murdered. Subsequent research by Mel Ayton and a more thorough investigation by David Talbot and Jeff Morley has failed to uphold these identifications.
